Purpose of Position
The Associate Pastor Resident serves alongside and under the leadership of the Lead Pastor, participating in the shared spiritual leadership of the church with the Pastor/Elder Council. He provides shepherding care, ministry oversight, and administrative leadership in support of the mission and vision of Gospel Fellowship of Sussex. He works faithfully and collaboratively with the Lead Pastor, fellow elders, staff, deacons, and ministry leaders, exemplifying Christlike character, humility, and service within a framework of biblical plurality.

Qualifications
• Affirms, signs, and abides by the GFS Statement of Faith
• Meets the biblical qualifications of an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4)
• Demonstrates a shepherd’s heart with a desire to encourage and care for the body of Christ
• Demonstrates gifting and competency for ministry, particularly in administration and organization
• Demonstrates leadership, wisdom, and vision appropriate to a pastoral role
• Bachelor’s degree in Bible, Theology, or a related field (minimum)
• Strong biblical foundation with the ability to articulate, teach, and model sound doctrine
• Member of Gospel Fellowship of Sussex in good standing

Primary Responsibilities
Spiritual Formation, Teaching, and Prayer
• Diligently studies the Word of God for personal spiritual growth and for preaching, teaching, and counseling, with significant focus in Student Ministry
• Provides biblical teaching and discipleship within assigned ministries
• Models and participates in regular prayer for the church, staff, and community

Shepherding and Pastoral Care
• Provides pastoral care and biblical counseling for students, individuals, and families as needed
• Encourages, equips, disciples, and supports parents and guardians in their primary role of discipling their children
• Builds trust and healthy relationships with elders, staff, congregants, and community membersMinistry Oversight and Leadership Support

• Provides oversight for assigned ministries, which may include:
o Student Ministry
o Children’s Ministry and Nursery
o Hospitality Ministry
o VBS and special ministry initiatives
o A/V Team, Website, and Communications
o Facilities, Building, and Grounds
• Recommends ministry improvements and helps develop new ministries in alignment with the church’s vision
• Establishes interim leadership plans when ministries experience leadership transitions
• Serves as part of the Child Protection Policy team

Administration and Operations
• Partners with the Lead Pastor to facilitate staff meetings and coordinate ministry operations
• Ensures effective internal communication among staff and ministry leaders
• Oversees church communications in partnership with the Lead Pastor, including internal and external messaging, publications, and communication policies
• Provides oversight of the administrative assistant and office volunteers
• Oversees church record keeping, files, and administrative systems
• Learns, implements, and maintains ministry-related systems and tools (e.g., Planning Center, A/V systems, child check-in), equipping others through training, documentation, and clear processes
• Purchases and implements necessary technology for worship, A/V, and ministry use with pastor/elder approval

Collaboration and Coordination
• Serves as liaison between the Lead Pastor, Pastor/Elder Council, deacons, and ministry leaders
• Works closely with ministry leaders overseeing décor, hospitality, and special events
• Dependably participates in church services, events, and meetings, including evenings and weekends as required

Relationships and Accountability
• Reports directly to the Lead Pastor
• Accountable to the Council of Pastor/Elders
