John Witherspoon was the sixth president of the College of New Jersey, mentor to James Madison, delegate to the Continental Congress, and the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence.

He is often thought to be the chief conduit of moral sense philosophy in America, but Dr. Mailer’s research demonstrates the resilience of Witherspoon’s evangelical beliefs.

Gideon Mailer, PhD, is Associate Professor of History at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and author of John Witherspoon’s American Revolution (Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 2017)
