John Witherspoon was the sixth president of the College of New Jersey, mentor to James Madison, delegate to the Continental Congress, and the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Gideon Mailer, PhD, is Associate Professor of History at the University Minnesota-Duluth and author of John Witherspoon’s American Revolution (Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 2017)
